Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution. It is based on another distribution called Debian. I have used Ubuntu because of this popularity. I believed the acquired skills would be more useful to a person in my tech support position.
Ubuntu has achieved the popularity based on reliability and ease of use. I have chronicled some uprade problems with Ubuntu in the past.
I recently found myself in mad position to put together a quick computer. My trusty laptop got smushed. I pulled out some parts I had stored for just such an emergency. I knew I would be dual booting so that I am able to stream Netflix.
The computer has a gig of RAM, an ASUS motherboard, an ATI video card and a Celeron D processor. This is not a screaming system, but more than adequate for XP and most Linux systems.
The XP sat up and runs fine. XP is a 9 year old system so this hardware was a breeze. Ubuntu is utilizing their new interface Unity. The Unity interface was pokey on thie system. I rebooted into the classic Gnome interface and the system runs quicker.
Sometimes problems with a system are obvious, and other times they are not so obvious. When windows Vista was being tested, I had a bad feeling while using it. It might have been the feeling that it was just not ready to use. I get that same feeling with this version of Ubuntu. The stability and reliability seemed to regress with this version.
Unity might have been a way to demonstrate that Ubuntu is different. The goal should be to demonstrate that the product is better. That was not proven here.
